In the generic fantasy world of [...] during one fine day, evil demons spurted out of the ground and started terrorizing the human world. Our scientists and historians have no clue to why this happened, but nonetheless, Damien, the human hero with a very inconspicuous name, rises to meet the evil wretches. Unfortunately, upon meeting Belphegor, the three headed dragon, Damien realized that the winged beast was totally immune to his attacks and consequently ate him. Inside the belly of the beast, he learned a new definition of pain and suffering and finally emerged back out as a generic evil game boss.

Rehashed heroes

Starting the game, the player must decide if he (and I presume girls won't play this violent game) wants to start a guest or a hive game. Hive means that your game data will be saved in the cloud, guest means that it will not be.

After playing through the epilogue as the awesome soon-to-be unplayable Damien, the player gets to choose a fresh character. There are two options:

• Warrior, One of the 300 spartan warrior that shaved his beard after the movie's production.
• Kunoichi, An obviously sexy female ninja with a revealing outfit
• There is also The Daemon Hunter, who can only be recruited after you reach level 30 with any other character and pay 100.000 coins. Or you can recruit him right away by spending SOL (read: real cash).

Darkness Reborn is a linear hack & slash game. Your character will advance along a set path, beating the hell out of anyone and anything that will come in his path. Seriously, stumps explode, rocks crumble and enemies are pulverized when you get near them. The control scheme is very simple. You will get a basic attack button that performs a single attack when pressed once and begins a never-ending series of attacks when held. As it does not consume anything, you will be holding a thumb over it almost the entire time. Once you kill enough things to gain a level, new kinds of attacks and abilities open up. These have a cooldown timer, and may only be performed again once after the timer expires. They also consume mana. But don't worry because mana auto-regenerates. You get up to three different types of abilities and so you may chain them together when you really need it. Each type has 6 abilities to choose from, and all can be upgraded individually. Along these you will learn up to 20 passive abilities to make your character even stronger.

Upgrading is done by spending gold or SOL, which is also used for buying special equipment, experience, energy and even gold coins. Besides the basic campaign mode, you can enter in a player versus player competition or participate in boss raids, which are cooperative runs against obscenely resilient monsters.

Conclusion

All in all, Darkness Reborn is an excuse to glamorous fantasy violence, little to no thinking and busyness opportunity through In App Purchases. It is true through that you can play the game just fine without purchasing anything, and it can also be more fun as what Darkness Reborn direly needs to be less boring and more challenging.
